Last weekend, the US women's national soccer team was knocked out of the World Cup by Sweden in a nail-biting 5-4 shootout. While fans across the country were still mourning, right-wing voices started flooding social media feeds and news channels, blaming the players for being "anti-American" and "anti-woman," and criticizing them not for their play on the pitch, but for what they stood for. Alex Abad-Santos is a senior correspondent at Vox and author of the recent piece, "The right-wing backlash against the US women’s national soccer team, explained." This week, OTM correspondent Micah Loewinger speaks with Abad-Santos about the right wing's celebration of this national sports team's defeat, and how it echoes the string of conservative backlashes against Bud Light, Target, and Starbucks, and other companies and celebrities who have inadvertently become symbols in anti-woke media campaigns.

This is a segment from our August 11, 2023 show, Go Woke, Go Broke.
